…as you were invited to enter in…

Over the years, I have begun to look forward to the month leading up to Christmas as a special time of reflection and anticipation. In fact, last year my roommates and I had a wonderful household Advent that included some beautiful artwork, as well. I’ve come to find out that the folks here in Chile generally don’t do much for Advent, though, as the end of the spring semester makes things crazy busy… and it’s just not part of the tradition. Despite this, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t miss the significance of the beautiful season this year. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to invite all of you to journey with me!

The idea is simple – each week we’ll focus on a different theme leading up the birth of Christ. I’ll share some thoughts and scriptures, and I would encourage you to do the same in the comments section or on your own blog. Let’s make it as interactive as possible! I also like the idea of lighting a candle each week for what that particular week symbolizes. I made a simple (and by simple, I mean cheap candles, paper plate, construction paper and tulle) Advent wreath yesterday and if you’d like to do the same, take a few minutes and rummage around your place – I’m sure you have something suitable. Mine thus far has four candles, as the supermarket only had 4-packs. I need to find a Christ candle for the last reading, but I can do that later.

Advent can take many shapes and forms, and here at meganbreed.com we’ll keep it fairly relaxed. If you would like a more theological reflection and reading of the corresponding liturgical passages, I would encourage you to tune in to a podcast each week that an old friend of mine is posting. All you have to do is click here for his website, then go to the writing tab. Scroll down and you’ll see the Advent Project. For our purposes, though, our weekly focus will be in this order: hope, peace, joy, love, and Christ. Check back later today for my first posting on HOPE.
